ARTIST PROFILE

Jeff Wahlstrom is a printmaker, collage artist, and sculptor living and working in Bangor, Maine. Undergraduate classes at Bates College with Donald Lent and Robert Feintuch set the stage for Jeff’s exploration of a medium he describes as “watercolor collage.” It is a process he begins by painting swaths of watercolor paper. He then tears, cuts, and glues the paper to compose his images, resulting in landscapes that are "built" using layer upon layer of paper to create perceived and actual depth of image.

In 2008, encouraged by his friend and neighbor, book artist Walter Tisdale, Jeff ventured into block printing. Guided by Tisdale, and with the generous use of his press and materials, Jeff has printed several editions of linoleum and wood block prints using a variety of methods and techniques. Most recently he has ventured into “white line” printing--a technique developed by a group of artists in Provincetown in the early 1900’s--as well as traditional Japanese woodblock printing.

In creating his block prints and watercolor collages, Jeff is inspired by the natural beauty of Maine and Atlantic Canada as he travels with family and friends throughout the region. His works feature mountain tops, dramatic vistas, and the rocky shores of Maine.

Today Jeff primarily splits his artistic time between his watercolor collages, block printing, and creating an occasional sculpture for friends. In addition to annual group shows with the Bangor Art Society and at local galleries, recent exhibitions include a 2018 group show at the Boyd Place Gallery, a 2019 solo show at the Sohn Gallery, a 2021 solo show in the gallery space at 900 Broadway in Bangor, and 2022 solo shows at the Bangor Public Library and the Rudman Winchell Gallery.
